"Americans aren't generally all that interested in what's happening outside the country."

That's honestly one of the saddest things I've ever read. Personally I don't care if people don't find my writing appealing/accessible; they can just follow someone else. Definitely don't want to indirectly support that sort of blinkered world view. I have a full-time writing job already, so I can afford to follow my principles on this one!
