But surely you won't earn from a non-member read? I thought they counted as external.

Did you know that Medium writers are paid by the read? That’s right — but it’s contingent upon how much of their stories are read. In order for your reading of the story to count, you have to read all the way through to the bottom of the story, including the list of links below it. One great way to do that is to listen to the story. You have that option at the top of the story, right by the date.
