Funnily enough I've just written an article on this. I think for me it's about picking your time/place. Don't bother me when I'm trying to work out at the gym, but a bar or nightclub is fine. Same with sliding into a woman's DMs, whether on Medium or Twitter or whatever — keep it to an online dating site, there are plenty around. As for what you say, cheesy lines are awful. "Hi, I'm X" is a fine opener, I think. I've been off the market many years now though, so if there's new rules I might have missed them
