Heroin Chic: a Dangerous Trend or a Natural Body Type?
Hint: it’s both
The news is all over TikTok and Twitter. It’s coming back. Heroin chic is coming back. Are you afraid? I am, but maybe not for the reason you think.
Let’s rewind: what is ‘heroin chic’ anyway?
Heroin chic refers to a cultural movement popularized in the early 1990s.
It’s often wrongly labelled an invention of the fashion industry, but it can also be seen in the music and films of the time. High-profile examples of this nihilistic obsession with heroin and addiction include the music of artists such as Nirvana and Hole, and books and movies like Trainspotting and The Basketball Diaries.
It was particularly evident in fashion and presented on the catwalk in the form of very slim models with straight, slightly greasy-looking hair and dark circles under their eyes. People often point to Kate Moss as emblematic of the look, particularly in her Calvin Klein underwear ads from the time, though I don’t see it personally.
