Hydroxychloroquine eases inflammation and protects my internal organs from being damaged. Which they would be if I allowed my lupus to go uncontrolled. It also cuts the incidence of flares by 50%.
Yes, it's not without its own risks. Most drugs aren't. I'm taking a chemotherapy drug right now which means I need to have to have a blood test every two weeks because it's literally toxic.
But five-year survival rates for untreated lupus are less than 50% and when I'm flaring I don't want to live anyway because the pain is so bad.
Ideally, I won't be on the hydroxy forever, although I only need an annual eye test, and only at a specialist rather than an optician if I'm still on it after five years. But I won't be able to stop my medication unless my symptoms go into remission, which is impossible without taking the medication in the first place.
As for vitamins, I take a vitamin B complex which I believe contains all the different B vitamins. I take pretty much every vitamin supplement going by this point, vitamin D, calcium, omega 3, the list goes on. It's really helped my energy levels.
