I disagree with your assertion that hard work only leads to success if you’re self-employed. That may be how it if in the US, I don’t know, but for me, I gained professional qualifications, got a junior position in my chosen field and have had several promotions and pay rises since then. I don’t know anyone useful, I’m just being rewarded for good work.
