I have always thought Charles was alright, progressiveness wise, if not in any other areas. Read Harry's book though and it would imply William and Kate are nasty pieces of work. Obviously that's only one side of the story, but I've disliked Kate ever since she showed up unmasked at a memorial for a murdered woman (masks were compulsory at the time), just to make sure everyone knew who she was, just to give the royal family's image a boost after they'd suffered some scandal. Left a really poor taste in my mouth.
