I Just Brushed My Teeth and Yes, I DO Want a Medal

Self-care is hard and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise

That title is a lie, by the way. I don’t know when I last brushed my teeth. A few days ago? A week? No idea.

I’d say I’m sorry if that grosses you out, but truthfully, I do not care. When you are suicidally depressed, oral hygiene very much takes a back seat. Any kind of hygiene, really. Showering right now is a monumental effort that I just do not have the energy for. Yeah, I’m gross. Deal with it.

Self-care is hard

This isn’t going to be a post about me though. This is going to be a post where we trash talk a garbage article I read bemoaning soft millennials and our supposedly performative self-care.

Apparently, mental ill health or physical ill health are not “excuses” to skip out on activities like showering or washing your face, and if you treat them as such, you are an idiot who is responsible for all your own problems.

And you absolutely must not offer any words of encouragement to people who are struggling with these daily activities — that will absolutely make the problem worse. You must “just do it”.

Just don’t
