I live in London, I'm quite familiar with diversity. I'm guessing you're USian and that's why there's a language barrier? In the UK, a sweeping statement or generalisation would be "Christians tell people God wants them to suffer". The use of the pronoun "me" in my title makes it quite clear, where I live, that it relates to my own personal experiences and is not intended as a slight on all Christians. To read it any other way, at least for speakers of British English, would be to assume I was saying I'd met every Christian on the planet and they had all said the same thing to me, which is frankly an unbelievable conceit.
If you can't see how these two sentences are different, and how my title was different from the insensitive statement in your story, I can't help you.
