I really think there should be far more honest discussion on what childbirth is really like. I did not know for decades that it was normal to tear, or to defecate during labour. Only through having friends with children have I learnt how pregnancy can wreck your body forever.

I don’t telling people this would put them off having children, but it would mean fewer people would think they failed because their birth didn’t look like it does on tv.
