I wish I’d grown up where you did Jessica. We hate intelligence in the UK. Being put into the “extension club” for bright pupils who weren’t being stretched enough by the normal curriculum would have been the death knell for my teenage social life if I weren’t already mercilessly bullied for getting As and “talking like I swallowed a dictionary”.

To live somewhere intelligence is actually valued would be sublime!
