I’m glad you said your suggestions may not apply outside of the US. SO MANY writers on here say some grammar conventions are incontrovertibly incorrect when they are standard in British English.

That aside, suggested addition: “payed” instead of paid. I see it everywhere, and it’s not only sailors using it!
