It's not a trend, it has ever been so. We largely use female as an adjective — female teachers, female cats, female nouns if you're French. When you use it as the noun it's quite dehumanising because, female what? It's unnatural language anyway. Is females really the word you would automatically reach for to describe a group of female humans? I find 'women' is what comes to mind first.
