I joined Medium in 2020. So, not exactly an old hand, but I’ve been here long enough to know the lingo. I’ve seen a lot of people conflating Medium membership with the Medium Partner Programme lately and at best, they’re confused; at worst they’re trying to con you. Here’s the difference.

What is Medium Membership?

Medium membership has nothing to do with getting paid for your writing.

What it means is that for $5 a month or $50 a year, you can access unlimited Medium stories. It should be easy to tell whether you’re a member or not — if you’re not, you can only read a measly three stories a month. After that, you’ll be prompted to become a member in order to read more.

There are no conditions to becoming a Medium member beyond paying the membership fee. It confers no benefits upon you other than unlimited reading.

What is the Medium Partner Program?

The Medium Partner Program is what allows you to be paid for your writing. To join the program, you need to have a minimum of 100 followers and to have published at least one story.
