A lot of productivity gurus will tell you the key to getting the most out of your day is to get up at 6am, but I’ll let you in on a secret: these people are setting you up to fail. Truly successful people would never allow themselves that sort of a lie-in unless it was Christmas Day, and probably not even then. I don’t need to set an alarm; I simply tell myself when I go to bed when I would like to wake up, and my eyes spring open at 4am.

Most people wake up dehydrated, so the first thing I do after my morning pandiculation (that’s yawning and stretching to you) is drink a litre of a water. Rainwater is best for connecting you with nature, but spring water will suffice if you’re in a bind. I usually drop three-quarters of a lemon in to steep the night before — coffee is a toxin, but lemon is nature’s pick-me up. Just make sure it’s organic and unwaxed.

The two most important parts of any morning routine are meditation and exercise. It can be difficult for some people to find time to fit both in, but not me: I just do both at the same time.
