Stop Trying to Make Me Love My Period
It’s messy, inconvenient and painful. I hate it.
I’m on my period right now. That means I’m writing this from bed, hot water bottle wedged behind my back and one eye on the clock, counting down to when I can take my next dose of strong painkillers. Far be it from me to judge anyone else’s hobbies, but it’s not my idea of a good time.
This wasn’t supposed to happen
The worst thing is, I’m not supposed to have my period right now. I’m not supposed to have it ever. I have taken the pill without breaks for years to avoid precisely this problem.
However, my body is apparently insanely sensitive to slight hormonal changes because I forgot to take my pill ONE DAY this week and here we are. I’m not happy. And OF COURSE, I only had white underwear clean today, which is now stained and will probably need to be binned.
All of the above considered, I’m baffled and frankly a little bit annoyed about the rash of articles insisting that those of us who bleed must all lovingly embrace our periods.
I’m not going to throw a party for my period
My issue isn’t with awareness. I’m all for normalising discussion of menstruation…
