Well that’s just annoying. The past perfect exists because it’s necessary. The double simple past changes the meaning, for example, I’d read “she met him before the party” as she met up with someone she knew before the party, but “she had met him before the party” just indicates that she first encountered this person at some point prior to the party.

Gah!
